Microchipping My Pet – FAQ2022-04-28T14:47:44-04:00

MICROCHIPPING MY PET

Answers to the most common pet owner questions about how microchips work.

What is a microchip and why does my pet need it?2022-04-26T13:11:52-04:00
  • Identifying your pet with a microchip provides your pet with permanent ID that serves as the ultimate safety net to help reunite you with your pet if their collar tag breaks or falls off or is removed.
  • A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and is encoded with a unique ID number that will be assigned to your pet. No two microchips have the same ID number.
  • The microchip is placed between your dog’s or cat’s shoulder blades under a veterinarian’s supervision. The microchip is passive, meaning it has no power source, and can only be ready by a microchip scanner. A microchip is not a GPS.
  • Implantation is quick, easy and virtually painless — similar to a vaccine injection — and can be performed during a regular veterinary check-up visit. Once implanted, the microchip does not have any personal information associated with it. The microchip must be enrolled to link to your pet’s profile and your contact information. When your pet’s microchip is enrolled with AKC Reunite’s Lost Pet Recovery Service, we can contact you and your alternate contacts if your pet ever becomes lost and/or found.
What is the difference between an AKC Reunite Indigo Microchip and an Indi Minichip?2022-04-26T13:19:02-04:00
  • Both the Indigo Microchip and Indi Minichip are manufactured by Trovan in Europe with the same stringent International Standards (ISO), and include human-grade needles.
  • The Indigo Microchip is 11.5 mm long with a 12 gauge needle, while the Indi Minichip is 8mm long with a 15 gauge needle. Because of their smaller size, the Indi Minichips have a smaller antenna which means they have a shorter read range when scanned. The Indi Minichip is ideal for cats, birds, guinea pigs, ferrets, and dogs with smooth and short coats and thinner skin with no thick skin folds; and it is NOT recommended for horses, pets with dense or long coats, pets with thick folds of skin or in pets with a potential to become obese.
My veterinarian does not use AKC Reunite microchips. How can I protect my pet with AKC Reunite?2022-04-29T12:50:02-04:00
  • If you’re looking for a veterinarian that uses AKC Reunite microchips, you can call our toll-free number 800-252-7894, and we can locate a veterinarian in your area.

  • If your pet is already microchipped with a different brand of microchip or enrolled with a different pet recovery service, your pet can still be protected by AKC Reunite. We enroll all brands of microchips.

Can I enroll another brand of microchip with AKC Reunite?2022-04-29T12:19:07-04:00

YES! AKC Reunite enrolls all brands of microchips and charges no annual fees or record update fees for as long as you own your pet!

Is the microchip a GPS?2022-04-29T12:15:56-04:00

A microchip is NOT a GPS or tracking device because it has no power source. Instead, a microchip contains a small antenna that can only be read by a microchip scanner commonly used by veterinarians, shelters, and animal control. When the scanner passes over the microchip, it reads the microchip ID number. It is not exactly the same, but similar to scanning a barcoded item at the grocery store.

How can I see that an implanted microchip works?2022-04-29T12:13:26-04:00
  • Once your pet’s AKC Reunite microchip is implanted, ask your veterinarian or pet professional to scan your pet and then show you how the scanner read the microchip’s unique ID number.
  • If your lost pet is ever found and scanned for a microchip, pet professionals refer to the American Animal Hospital Association’s PetMicrochipLookup.org database, so they know what microchip recovery service to contact.
How does an AKC Reunite enrollment work with a microchip?2022-04-26T15:33:09-04:00

If your lost pet’s microchip is scanned and detected, and our 24/7 Reuniters Helpline is contacted, Pet Recovery Specialists will call, email, and text you and the alternate contacts on your pet’s enrollment record to help reunite you and your pet as quickly as possible.
